Alright, I'll try to avoid a long post but here goes.

Standard sig sizes are between:

250-400 for the width.
100-200 for the height.

Lately I've been using 350x120 (pixels), so if your going to make a sig, try that size.

The basic rule of thumb for sig beginners is to try to match your BG (Background) with your Stock (Render).

That is evidenced in these sigs:

One of my very first ones, when I thought animation was the shit:

And this one, you can see how its kind of a glossy, yellow glow theme:

So a good initial step when making your sig is to put the render in as a first step, then use the colors off of it to make your bg.

As far as text goes, make it a habit to choose how your text will be before you start the sig. Am I going to make small text? Big text? Hard to see text? Vivid text? etc.

A good rule of thumb with text is that if your going to have two pieces of writing on the sig, ie: the name of the sig, and the subtext, then use the same text for both parts, just a smaller size.

Like the turreted barrel sig up there. Both the same fonts, one just smaller then the other.

Sigs take a lot of practice, but if you keep trying shit out and accepting and doing requests, you'll get there, trust me.

Here was my very first sig, dont laugh:

Look how cluttered the renders are, how shitty the text is, and how NASTY the huge ugly baby shit yellow border is. Although it is kind of a yellow and black theme from the scorpion render, it still was pathetic. You can hopefully see how I've advanced to this day.
