i dont know about that. in 2004, MLG was playing halo 1. in 2005, h2 started, but FB plays nothing like they did back then. the patch itself changed how the entire game is played.
although they have the same philosophy playing both games. go for total slaying dominance/map control. i think FB is struggling right now because top teams have finally gotten to the point where they can match FB in terms of skill (and if not match, come really close). it's something they're unused to experiencing (i mean let's face it team domination had no team that could even remotely match that kind of slaying power).
honestly i think it mainly has to do with the skill bar that halo 2 has, and in many ways i find it disturbing. a competition game imo should be skill first, teamwork/chemistry secondary. teamwork and chemistry in any game is something legendary players/teams/dynasties from great players. it should not be the foundation of a game.
