CPL Dallas - 11-02-2007, 09:38 PM

So who's considering going? For those of you who don't know CPL is holding a million dollar Halo 3 tournament in Dallas Texas. Cash prizes extending up to 64th place, 33rd-64th place getting $2,500 each. Sounds good right? Well there are some problems.

-As of right now prizes are only guaranteed if the max number of players sign up (this number is not yet known)
-CPL isn't actually running the tournament, they're publicizing it. Another, unknown organization is running everything.
-Entry fee is $475 per person.
-The tournament will be a 4 man FFA style tourney. Exact gametypes have not yet been released but it's known that your standings will result from accumulative games which will, over the course of several games, decide who goes to the next round.
-Tournament will last 5 days, factor in 2 days for travel the entire deal lasts about a week.

I personally am considering attending, if only because 64th and up guarantees at least 500% pay out, but with prize money existing as a direct result of the money they get from entry fees, it isn't exactly a guarantee. It also doesn't make it any better that the entry fee is $475. Someone on the CPL forums put it best "these are kids playing a video game, not hot shot poker players who can drop $1,500 to play for a week. After airfare, hotel for 5 days, a $475 entry fee and the inability to guarantee prizes, how can you expect this to work?"

Anyone else toying with the idea? I'll have to see how this develops over time before I decide.

SilverSon is good at FFA and he certainly puts up good gameplays, but I wouldn't count him near the top, especially since the game is still in it's infant stages.

well...look at it this way. If you are paying 475 dollars per person...think about that in terms of a prize if only 10 people sign up. Cash prizes would be ENORMOUS even if the max or projected amount of players diddnt sign up...just think about that.

Well the total amount of prize money would be $4,750 split amongst 10 people. 100 people signing up means that the total prize money is $47,500. First place taking probably one quarter of that. Because they guarantee cash prizes up to 64th place 63 out of the 100 would split the other 75% of the money.

Unless they change something I don't see more than 200 people attending. One problem they'll have to face is false advertising. They're labling it the largest gaming tournament in history. $1,000,000 in cash prizes split amongst the top 64 players.

I think they're trying to make the leap from casual tournament to big money World Series of Poker status. Problem is that most competitive players play casually as, to date, MLG only rewards those in the top 8 (top 4 quite generously). They need about 2,200 people to sign up to fill in the full amount of prize money they need under the assumption that prizes are 100% entry fee generated. I predict not even 1/10 that number show up.

You spelled fail wrong.

Honestly tessler it sounds like a gamble man and I have no idea what to tell you. It sound intriguing but has so many places where it just sound flawed. I think there are to many chances for things to go wrong I wouldn't do it if I was you.
