How exactly do you measure whether the other team was trying or not?

Close game = both trying?
Big win = they suck?
Big loss = we weren't really trying?


This phenomenon actually has a name. It is called the Fundamental Attribution Error.
Simplified definition:

1. When I do well it is because I am talented and good (internal cause), when I do poorly it is because of bad luck (external cause).

2. When you do well it is because you are lucky (external cause), when you do poorly it is because you are bad, unskilled, no talent, poor character, etc. (internal cause).
