Closing Down GamingVidz? / Yes I was FRAiD - 10-06-2012, 11:41 AM

Hey Guys,

I read the post that Verity shared back in August. I think it's funny that some of you knew how to get a hold of me but didn't contact me... anyway I wanted to write this post and put it in the site news section so that the active members would read it.

Closing Down GamingVidz.com?

I think I might be best to just close down GamingVidz or something since as you know I'm too busy with other projects/life to really maintain the site etc and every new forum upgrade just results in more damn spam bots circumventing them.

I had a lot of fun with the forum over the years, but forum politics (especially gaming forum politics) were very tiring which is part of why I started other sites that were more mainstream / didn't rely on communities. In fact, years ago I had a guy from another forum actually hack into my GoDaddy domain account to try and steal my domains because someone from this forum was over on their forum bashing them talking about how GamingVidz was better. Yah... ridiculous I know but it was true. Sometimes (and again this isn't the majority of the time) the immature people really ruin things (especially in a gaming community).

FRAiD = thehalogod

I saw someone say that were were probably the same people in that forum thread as well and I just wanted to clear that up by saying that yes I was FRAiD way back in the day.

I can't even remember my reasoning for why I had the two separate accounts. I think that I just didn't want people to know that I was the owner of the website (probably for some paranoid privacy based reason or something) so I had an admin account that I used so that it could be separate from me (again probably stupid / no one probably would have cared if I said I was the owner from the very beginning).

If you feel hurt or annoyed by the fact that we were the same person then I'm truly sorry about that. Again like I said, I must have had some reason, albeit a stupid one, to do the two accounts in the beginning. But looking back it was a mistake and if I could do it over I'd have just said I was the owner from the beginning.

I'm admitting the mistake so although some people may be upset, please don't hate too much on me. I am sorry. It was stupid. I should have been upfront from the beginning.

Fond Memories:

I really had a fun time talking with many of you on the forum and posting montages, watching other peoples montages years back before anything like Twitch.tv existed. In some senses we were pioneers carving out a new frontier in gaming and for that I'll be forever grateful for GamingVidz.

Should I Close It Down?

Because I'm too busy etc. I really don't think I can be a moderator on the forum. I could potentially set it up so that new user registrations need to be moderated (I'm not sure if it's an option in this older version of vBulletin or not though)

In any case, let me know what you think.

Chris

P.S. What I'm Playing Now

Lately I've been playing League of Legends and I also have Dota 2 beta access.

If anyone wants to play with me my username is: paperstacking (intentionally douchey sounding name as I made it when I played with Annihilator and Vendetta)

I'm also still playing Xbox 360 games - more co op style ones under gamertag = thehalogod

Don't have a lot of time atm but...

GV served it's purpose damn well back during H2, but now it's sad to see it being run over by bots and what not. I think it'd be better if were taken offline, it'll be strange to not be able to come back and see what is going on, but I think most members are friends on facebook/bnet/other ways to stay in contact.

It was always really fun coming here and posting, then playing H2 with people, but that was a different time and the last thing I want to see is this forum merged with another or something similar.

Also, I think Frank was the first one to speculate that you were Fraid. We thought it was hilarious that it might be true, to be honest.

Yah I don't know why I felt the need to separate the two things

Hmm... maybe we should play league sometime. I just added you.
If you could prevent a constant flow of new bots, even if it means shutting down registrations, I would happily continue to moderate the site. It's pretty firmly engrained in my mind that when I'm bored on the internet I type ga 'down' 'enter' so even if the site was taken down, I would probably navigate here out of habit.

Haha, I do the same thing... and having a real job now I tend to be bored on the internet quite a bit

I updated the registration system so that all new users need to be approved. Verity you should have access to those users if need be.

So in the interim that should work.

Awesome, I'll start cleaning up the built up spam over the next week or two

I don't know how to put into words my feelings for this site. It was definitely a huge part of my adolescent life, and I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to meet such cool dudes from a gaming forum. I couldn't agree more with the pioneer statement in the OP, even though I never contributed a fragvid myself, I couldn't imagine where modern montages/fragvids would be without some of the members of this community.

It's been really hard to come back often, the Air Force keeps me pretty busy. I'm still on XBL though! I definitely wanna keep in touch with you guys, so feel free to f/r me on facebook or XBL. Much love!

Keep in touch!

Hm, good timing on my part then. It was just a coincidence that I needed to find something from my profile from a long time back. Man, I haven't been here in a while, brings back memories.

On one hand, closing down the site will be closing down a once huge part of my life.
On the other, it will prevent future employers from finding my profile here and seeing my awful past. I'm torn.

Anyways, whatever happens folks, so long and thanks for all the fish.

I'd rather not have the site took down. i had posted a really really long response a couple days back but i was drunk and then my internet failed. so its probably good i didn't post.
