How can I reduce my video file size? - 11-10-2005, 08:29 AM

So every time I go into movie maker and import my video from my cap card i always get an error and movie maker shuts down. I need it so i can compress my files so they aren't 200+ megs. Anyone else have this problem or know another way to compress my files?? Thanks!

If you're exporting to mpeg which sounds like you are, you'll always end up witih a little larger file size.

How long is your video... you needa to provide more details

Sorry. Usually I just record full games so they can be anywhere from 5-15 minutes long. I was using the ADS DVD capture thing I got at Walmart but I am going to return it and get either a Dazzle or ATi. Until then I have some games I want to post/edit. Preferable as a .wmv file. I open WMM and select import file and select the vid I want and when I drag it to the bottom timeline or whatever I get an error and WMM closes.

You're probably getting the error for trying to import a video that isn't supported. Many videos (like mpeg videos) can't just be dragged into an editor and edited. You often times need to get them into a different format before doing that.

Maybe that's the problem then. I did get one video to work that I captured in .avi format but the resolution was so small so I was trying to capture in I think mpeg-2 format for the other videos and those are the ones not working. Maybe I will just get the ATi and real HaloGods post on his setting and stuff and just use that and forget about the ones I have recorded now... Here is a link to the .avi one...

.avi is what you use to edit. You cannot ever use mpeg to edit with to my knowledge. Record MPEG open in virtual dub... follow my tutorial.
