Mac-Compatible Capture Card? - 10-31-2006, 05:31 PM
What is a good cap card that works with a Mac? I was going to go with the ATI TV Wonder Pro, but I'm afraid it won't work with my Mac. Do I have any options? Thanks in advance for tips guys.

run virtual windows when capturing.
hardware is always supported. Mac' are just PC's with a glorified exterior (well this depends on how old your Mac is). do you have a Mac with a G4/G5 processor or one of the new ones with Intel. you can also boot windows on a Mac, since they share the same x86 architecture now. i'll be honest when i say that i dont understand why people buy mac's anymore. is the trendiness really worth extra money you pay? it's not like you can't boot OSX on a regular PC nowadays. |

Well actually, you can't boot OXS on a Windows-Based Computer, but you can boot Windows on a Mac. Also, everyone in my family are Mac users, because my family is very arts-oriented (my dad is a professional singer, my mom is a professional theatre actress, my uncle is a solo pop artist, one of my cousins is a graphic design artist, and another cousin is a classical guitarist, and yet another is in a rock band). Macs are almost always the choice of artists and people who need a computer that is useful for creative tasks.
Aside from that, there's no way around the fact that once you figure your way around OSX, it is 10x easier and more user-friendly than Windows. Anyway, back on topic, thanks for you help. Just to clarify, you're saying that I can use a PC Capture Card (such as ATI TV Wonder) on my Mac? Because I can't edit .wmv files.

the important question is how old is your Mac? if you have a Mac made in the last year or so, it's going to have an Intel processor. Mac started using the dual core intels in their laptop lines a little around a year ago, with the Intel Core 2's being the processor of choice in all the new Apple desktops.
This is why I said that you can boot Mac OSX on a Windows PC. Apple computers ARE PC's since they share the one thing that used to separate them (the x86 CPU architecture). Mac's have traditionally used IBM PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) processors to power their machines, but now that it's all changed, you can dual boot Mac OS and Windows on the same machine. I know because my friend has done it, and there are a lot of forums/sites dedicated to helping people do it. Hardware for computers/desktops in particular is all generic. Nothing differentiates PC maker from PC maker other than price, case, and customer support. What I'm saying is that any piece of hardware will generally work on ANY computer, because they all share the same components. The trouble is with getting the software/drivers to work with something in Mac. My suggestion is just to run virtual PC on your Mac OS, and then record when running Virtual PC. it's similar to if you want to play games on a Mac machine. I realize that artists tend to use Macs. the only reason they do its because Mac has a lot of great software that is only compatible with Mac OSX. Macs do not offer any real performance differences between regular PC's. I'll agree that Mac OSX is easier to navigate/less annoying to use though. |
