gaming is not an athletic activity, so according to the dictionary, no.. gaming is not a sport. however it is still a competition.

Gaming doesnt take hand eye coordination. It takes common sense you dont need to have good hand eye coordination to press buttons. You are saying pressing buttons on a elevator takes hand eye coordination.

i forgot youre thinking about your next move and ur trying to kill and outsmart your opponent in a an elevator

Im still not 100% on weather or not I think gaming is a sport. But, everyone here looks at the definition of 'sport'. When you do that, you actually see the word 'game' (in many of the other definitions for 'sport') numerous times. But they are usually in a different sense of the word.

Furthermore, if you look up the definition of 'gaming' you'll see that the word 'sport' appears only a few times. In fact, the FIRST word that is given as a synonym for 'gaming' is... you guessed it... 'sport'

So, im gonna have to lean towards 'Yes, its a sport' ... for now. Im still not completely sold on the idea.

but its easy to press an elevator button because u have as much time as u need and u can press whatever one you want and you basically win if u wanna put it that way but u have to press the right buttons at the right time in halo and think about it too

so basically what you said there is as much hand eye cordination as in video games as in elevators because all you are doing is pressing buttons. Hand eye cordination has nothing to do with thinking or having alot of time do it.

I say it is a sport, by definition.

A sport requires physical activity, and gaming does require quick reaction time and good hand eye coordination. This may not be 'physical' in the sense of weightlifiting, but it doesn't fall into 'mental' or 'spiritual' so it has to be physical, being that it deals with your body

Mentally, gaming is a challenge (well, competitive games), you have to think your way through situations, and you have to use communication/teamwork in many games. That is all mental.

Many people will disagree, and their arguments are valid, but by DEFINITION, which is the one you put up in the first post, yes, it is a sport.

actually it does matter its just easier to stare at a button and press it once then walk around pressing multiple buttons multiple times

I still don't think it's a sport more than something like poker or chess is a sport. I respect people who think it is a sport or play it like one, but I don't count it as one. Sports to me take more physical activity than moving your thumbs. I don't care what the dictionary says, but sitting in front of a screen playing FPS is not a sport to me, even if it's competitive. (It's not a far stretch to argue that WoW is a sport after this..) Regardless, I certainly don't play it as one.
