Wireless - 12-26-2006, 09:00 AM
I've decided to play wirelessly on my 360, and was wondering just how much of a difference it would be. I have a cable modem, and I'd probably be running around 54 kb/s. Aside from never being able to be host on Halo now, yes you heard me, it should be green bar right? Does it also make it more probable that you will lag out of rooms in GoW? Any help is appreciated.

What type of wireless router are you using? Are there any metal walls or large apparatuses that my get in the way of the signal? I've found that having the router elevated higher than the receiving members is very beneficial.

i play wireless on my standard xbox. it's not a problem for me, but my connection is definitely worse --although this probably has more to do with the distance between my router and gaming router than anything else. you prob wont experience any serious lag, but if i had it my way, i'd always run a wired connection.
xbox live only measures LAG, it doesn't measure latency. Latency is created by the constant need to add extra processing to the signal in order to compensate for the instability. both though factor into what you call 'lag' in games. therefore everyone being 'green bar' doesn't necessarily mean a host is good/bad. this is why your british friends playing against you in the green bar will still complain about host even when everyone is 'green bar'. latency builds up everytime a signal has to be reprocessed. with greater distance and more devices (i.e. wireless routers and switches), you add more latency into the mix. |

it mainly depends on the host. But, just to warn you, wireless is a lot more expensive. The modem (if you dont have it, a good one) cost about 50 dollars, and the router for your xbox costs 100 dollars, and to hook it up takes a lot longer than to just use a eithernet cable. But yes, it mainly depends on the host if you habve a good connection. Just like halo.

I have wireless on both xbox's. Great moving them round everywhere.
As Ace said, it's a pritty decent connection unless someone is using the net on other computers. I've had host wireless even when I was sitting there in red bar and shooting people on one side of lockout then suddenly dieing on the other.
