Recording with High-Def? - 02-04-2006, 04:49 PM

Does anybody know how to record with the high-definition (component) cables... there is 2 red, 1 green, 1 blue, and 1 yellow plugin (compared to the yellow, white, red)??? Because i just got the high-def cables for my 64 inch Mitsubishi HDTV, and the graphics are amazingly better.... does anybody know how to record this?

EDIT: this is a picture of what the cords look like...
The 2 left 1's are audio, the right 3 are video

You'll most likely run into issues with your Cap Card... I'm actually glad to see that I'm not the only one wondering about this. I actually found a capture device that could capture Component video connecitons... only it was about $1,000... i little out of my price range

i dont think theres any cheap options out right now. I know what you mean about the graphics though, they are freakin sweet.

I have a feeling with everything moving towards HD these days it wont be longbefore we see more HD capture devices.

Your best bet would be to find a DVD recorder with component video input. Then use a DVD rom and ripping software. The problem is, after compression, your not goin to see a difference. Mainly because a monitor can't do 1080i properly (not sure about 480 or 720p though.) Besides, a 5 minute montage in HD would be 300+MB, and it wouldn't be worth the download.

My advice is to record at the highest bitrate possible, watch the video (once its in AVI format) and then experiment with compression. Find out if you can see a difference between 8mbps and 4mbps. I doubt you'll see much of a difference, if any.

ATI has a HDTV tuner card that has capture, but it only records from an antenna. Component video capture cards are $1000+.

The best you could do is capture using s-video which is slightly better quality than composite video. So with an ATI capture card or video card with capture (VIVO). Your max resolution would still be 720x480 though.

I also agree with fragger about the dvd recorder with component video cables and can record 480p. H2 only outputs 480p with the component video cables. Dvd's resolution is also 720x480 so it'd be about the same as the capture card. ATI cards have extremely good deinterlacing so there wouldn't be much difference between the two.

I'd still choose the capture card way because there'd be fewer steps involved, and you know there isn't a chip in the dvd recorder as powerful as a computer for the encoding.
