not really. by making a new xbox with a built in hd-dvd drive your putting your product at huge risk.
1). your alienating your consumer base. you're saying: we rushed the 360 into production to get sales, and you shoul wait a year before buying any of our products.
2). not as many people would be persuaded to purchase a 600 dollar machine. the great thing about the 360 is that you can choose not to purchase the hd-dvd add on, and still have a next-gen, fully functional machine with great graphics etc....m$ is able to completely offer an entire lineup
in addition since m$ by updating their machine with add-ons they're covering the entire spectrum of buyers. this is like when you buy a car. would you rather buy a car that already has all the goodies on it standard (in effect forcing to purchase what you don't want), or do you want it to be customizable and offer a bottom barrel, and a top of the line model? exactly.
$200 is cheap for hd-dvd. although i expect the next gen machine (after this gen) not even to use an optical format, i think this is pretty good.
why would ps3 do better. it's gotten huge negative press. hd-dvd players and discs are more popular by far than blu-ray. ps3 imo is a huge risk for sony. they're depending it not only to sell a game console/games (sony loses money/console sold), they also in effect depending on its success to push a new optical format, and new type of processor. in effect, sony seems to suffer from the problem of 'putting too many eggs in one basket'. software sells game consoles, game consoles do not sell themselves. by providing lackluster games/not enough console specific games, sony stands to lose a lot more than the next generation console wars battle.
let's not even mention the fact that putting in a hd-dvd addon would raise manufacturing costs significantly, leaving m$ with an excess stock of regular dvd-9 drives. i'm sure that their deal with samsung specified not only how long samsung would provide dvd-9 drive units, but a specific number. if m$ made the hd-dvd a default player, they'd be forced to purchase back all the excess drives.
